As with the Navigon and Tom-Tom car kits, the US$129.99 premium car kit includes a built-in GPS receiver for better accuracy. This Magellan iPad application has some of the features like secure vehicle mounting for iPad or iPod touch, Accommodates most silicon skins and hard shell cases, Adjustable mount securely rotates iPad to either portrait or landscape mode for optimal positioning and widescreen route display, Recharges battery via the vehicle power outlet, Amplified speaker with volume control for loud and clear phone calls and directions, Noise canceling microphone for full duplex speakerphone operation, Auxiliary audio output and Bluetooth enables hands-free calling. While designed for use with the Magellan road mate application, the premium car kit works with any navigation app. It has the ability to accommodate hard shell cases to be one of the most compelling features, as many of the other car kits require a naked iPad or iPod touch.

Since the release of iPhone 3.0 there have been a variety of GPS application that has entered the App Store. Each of these iPad applications offered a slightly different interface and database information. This application has the visual style. The use of color in this application is really brings important things that bring our attention. The interface for this app is extremely simple, and yet at the same time easy to customize how we want it. Once we open up Magellan Road Mate we are taken to the main map screen where we have the map of where we are in the top area of the screen and a menu across the bottom. It is easy to quickly do a search around the map for a road or Point of Interest. One of the big things in this app is whether the POI and street database. Without these being accurate the app serves no purpose. Really the only app that we have found to have more accurate POI results was the Tom-Tom app. The Magellan Road Mate App for iPad uses the same easy-to-use interface as their dedicated personal navigation devices.
